With all the changes happening on the Internet probably the most interesting and exciting for the average computer user is Internet-Video and its sub-categories, Internet-TV and IP-TV

Internet-Video (IV) is the general technology that enables the transmission of Video over the Internet. IV can take the form of television or video transmissions, whether in the form of short clips and home-made videos as found on YouTube or the full-scale productions that are streamed from commercial enterprises like ABC Television.

Internet television (or Internet TV) is television distributed via the Internet. Internet television allows viewers to choose the show they want to watch from a library of shows. The primary models for Internet television are streaming Internet TV or selectable video on an Internet location, typically a website.

IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) offerings are typically offered on discrete service provider networks. For residential users with cable or satellite service, IPTV is often provided in conjunction with Video on Demand and may be bundled with Internet services such as Web access and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol or Internet telephone service).

How these technologies are delivered to the user is changing. AT&T, for example, is introducing its “switched video” IP which provides distinct advantages over the current distribution technology.  In today’s video delivery, all TV channels are available at the TV and your set “tunes” to the requested channel. Switched-digital-video systems can deliver channels more efficiently than broadcasting them by sending video streams to a subscriber only when a channel is requested. The assumption is that not every channel in a switched group will be viewed simultaneously.
